Pwnie Express, a leader in innovative penetration testing products, was at West Point, United States Military Academy discussing their DARPA Cyber Fast Track story
October 24, 2012
Innovative pentesting product company, Pwnie Express stopped in at West Point to meet with the Special Interest Group for Security Audit and Control (SIGSAC). This group is comprised of cadets who have strong interest in computer security. SIGSAC is located within the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department at the United States Military Academy. The topic of discussion? The DARPA Cyber Fast-Track Program (CFT). CFT is designed to fund research to be performed by boutique security companies, individuals, and hacker/maker-spaces, and allow them to keep the commercial Intellectual Property for what they create. The goal is not to have these entities focus on solving DoD problems, but rather to fund research efforts these organizations would have considered on their own but are not pursuing due to complexity, cost, or time.
CFT briefings to SIGSAC are regularly coordinated by DARPA to provide SIGSAC with insight into some of the latest emerging technologies as a result of this vital bridge into boutique security companies, individuals, and hacker/maker-spaces. Penetration testing was the focus of the day as Pwnie Express was joined by Georgia Weidman of Bulb Security, creator of the Smartphone Pentest Framework – SPF (more CFT funded research). M. Anthony Hughes, Director of Customer Development, described the process surrounding the introduction of the Power Pwn, a wired and wireless pentesting product in the form factor of a fully functional power strip. “We had a number of options but the Cyber Fast Track program was the fastest way to get it done” Pwnie Express announced the release of the Power Pwn during Black Hat and DefCon 2012. “It was awesome spending time with the cadets and staff. We look forward to the opportunity to return with an update”, said M. Anthony Hughes of Pwnie Express.
